Turf Laying FAQs

Before laying turf, it’s essential to prepare the ground thoroughly. This includes removing any existing grass or weeds, loosening and turning over the soil, and then adding a fresh layer of topsoil if needed. Proper soil preparation creates the ideal foundation for your new lawn. You should also level the area to eliminate bumps or hollows. Once the ground is level, many experts recommend spreading an all purpose fertiliser over the soil about a week before turfing. This fertiliser provides nutrients that will help the new turf establish strong roots.
The most important thing to put under turf is a layer of healthy topsoil. Ideally, you want about 10–15 cm of quality topsoil spread over the ground before you lay turf. This provides a nutrient rich, well draining base for the turf to root into. If your existing soil is poor or compacted, adding new topsoil ensures the grass roots have a soft, fertile medium to grow in.
In the UK, the best time of year to lay turf is generally during the mild and wetter seasons; spring or autumn. These seasons offer the ideal conditions for new turf to root and grow.

Autumn (particularly mid to late September into October) is often cited as the perfect turfing window, because the soil is still warm from summer but the air is cooler and rains are more frequent.

Spring (March to April) is another excellent period, as temperatures start to rise and rainfall is typically sufficient for growth. Laying turf in spring gives the lawn time to establish before the hotter summer months.

You should avoid laying turf in extreme conditions; in the middle of winter if the ground is frozen, or in mid-summer heat and drought, which can stress new turf.

Yes, you must remove any old grass, weeds, or plant debris before laying new turf. Laying turf over existing grass or weeds is not recommended, because the new turf’s roots will struggle to penetrate through to the soil. Old vegetation can also decompose and cause an uneven surface or invite disease. For best results, clear the area completely: strip off the old grass (often called turf cutting), and pull out or kill any weeds present. Make sure you get rid of the roots of persistent weeds as well.

While it is possible to lay turf on your existing soil, using fresh topsoil will generally yield much better results and a lawn that thrives.

Yes, it’s a good idea to lightly water the soil right before you lay the turf. The ground should be damp (not muddy or waterlogged) when you start turfing.

Moist soil will help the new turf strips settle in and encourages the grass roots to grow downward quickly. If the soil is bone dry, it can pull moisture out of the turf, stressing the young grass. By watering the prepared ground a few hours before installation, you ensure there’s adequate moisture below the turf. Just make sure there are no puddles; the soil should be moist to the touch but firm enough to walk on without sinking. After laying the turf, you should also water the entire lawn thoroughly.
